" I make socks for them for they are making freedom for others...whats a little wool, candy and love cost? just my time and heart felt thank you for risking their lives for us....knitting keeps me busy instead of worrying about Edward and Oliver pilots over in the war...I'm knitting for them and their comrads...it makes me feel like one person can help..."
_ tutu a documented conversation of my grandmother talking about wartime, her two sons who were pilots and why she was knitting even during the interview My dad did the interview for a college paper and still has the original notes.

My Grandmother knitted socks, gloves and bandages for WWII soliders. SHe used these red/white and blue needles and had a tin from the Red Cross with patterns, yarn, scissors inside. Not sure what happened to the tin but I inherited the needles I dreamed of using, I was allowed to use chopsticks for knitting at that time.

I remember the wool was not itchy but in funny drab colors of brown, khaki and od green. She also saved up money to send hard candy to them inside each glove or sock.

Knitting for Victory Article WW II

The word NEEDLE has NEED as part of the word, I think it means you knit for those in NEED, you NEED to knit and NEED to teach others this gift .

A good group to join if you knit socks!! Soldiers need warm comfortable socks and need many pairs for they wear out!! With each stitch send a soldier some love!

The Ships Project

The ships project was founded on October 2001 by Ellen Harpin in response to a letter requesting warm handcrafted items, especially slippers, for the crew of the USS Bataan. Since then, the project
has grown to more than 1,000 individuals as well as dozens of church and civic groups creating handcrafted items for those deployed in the fight against terrorism. Since 2003 over 100,000 items had been shipped to those in need.

The Hugs Project

There is a wonderful group of patriotic people on the internet called The Hugs Project. Our mission is to let young (and some not so young) troops know that they are not forgotten. We do that by making and sending them handmade items of cooling and warmth (depending on the season). We are already hearing from our "guys" that it is cooling off rapidly "over there" and that they need warm hats, neck warmers, balaclavas and fingerless mitts. Black is the preferred color but dark colors like brown and gray will also work. Wool is the required yarn since it doesn't melt and stick to their skin if they are in a fire or explosion. Awful to think about but a fact of their lives.

We have more than 150,000 men and women currently deployed to the Middle East and it will be below freezing there VERY soon so they sure need your help. Minus 30 is not unusual in the mountains of Afghanistan.

Please contact us at TheHugsProject@cox.net or visit The Hugs Project online to learn more about how you can make a difference in the quality of life for our dedicated American military. I don't know about you but I'm very happy that there is someone willing to go into harm's way for me to look evil squarely in the eye.

Respectfully,

Karen Stark
